Understanding the Targeting of Witches and Sorcerers
Witches and Sorcerers have always been the first targets of authoritarian regimes. This is due to their historical tendency to rebel against tyranny and their supernatural powers, which can effectively challenge oppressive forces.
Witchcraft vs. Sorcery
The Nature of Sorcery
Sorcery dwells in the esoteric. It is intellectually based, utilizing advanced principles of philosophy, astrology, astronomy, geometry, mathematics, chemistry, physics, languages, and more. The rituals involved are extensive and complex, requiring precise formulations for success. They build upon a foundation of deeply occult knowledge, passed down through ages by priesthoods, kings, secret societies, and renowned scholars.
These practices demand expensive and hard-to-find tools, ancient manuscripts, and rare tomes. Sorcerers often require a luxury of time to effectuate their work. Traditionally, sorcery has been the domain of those with wealth or patronage, allowing them to secure secret studies, libraries, laboratories, and ceremonial chambers. These spaces are far removed from the distractions of city life, such as honking horns and roaring engines.
The magician, or sorcerer, is a deeply contemplative practitioner. They are preoccupied with angels, demons, jinn, and dragons, often drawn to the study of alchemy in its various forms. Throughout history, sorcerers have been the chart-makers, cartographers, and inventors of symbols and codes. They have crafted illuminated manuscripts and musical transcriptions, created sensitive instruments for observation, and invented technological wonders. Druidry and various secret societies are largely based on the traditions of sorcery, though some lean more toward nature-based practices.
The Essence of Witchcraft
In contrast, the magick of witchcraft is practical. Historically, witches were rarely members of esoteric societies and often did not possess or read books about magick. Spells and rituals were typically passed down through word of mouth, due to secrecy concerns and lack of access to educational resources.
Witches have always felt more at home in the woods, gardens, and kitchens than in ceremonial chambers. However, the diminishing availability of private and safe outdoor spaces has pushed them back into "cottages" to perform their secret rites, away from prying eyes. Witchcraft requires simple tools, but items like cauldrons, athames, and even natural brooms are now mostly found in specialty occult shops. While appealing witchy supplies can be found on platforms like WitchTok, Etsy, and Amazon, many are tainted by commercialism. These tools, accessories, and decorations can distract from the true origins of witchcraft and the people who have traditionally practiced it: the poor, the abused, the marginalized, and the scapegoated.
Unlike sorcerers, witches often suffer at the hands of forces they cannot escape. Some seek God in traditional religions, while others seek relief from oppression. When practiced correctly, witchcraft provides that relief.
The Evolution of Witchcraft
Modern Interpretations
Modern books on witchcraft categorize it broadly into three groups: Sorcery (or Ceremonial Magick), Coven Witchcraft, and Solitary Witchcraft. The Wiccan movement, which began in 1950s Britain, became a blend of neo-Pagan Traditional Coven Witchcraft, Tradition-based Open-Membership Coven Witchcraft, Traditional Hereditary Witchcraft, and various ethnic Pagan worship groups.
Diluted versions of witchcraft gained popularity in the United States from the late 1950s to the 1990s through music, movies, books, and television. However, these often lacked direct links to the real practices of witchcraft, which remained hidden from most people during those decades. The sadistic aspects of occultism became known to many due to the Charles Manson Cult murders in 1969. Subsequent disclosures of sinister secret society activities fueled various Satanic panics.
Despite this, witchcraft as a religion or spiritual path was not widely acknowledged until the birth of the Internet. The popularity of the Harry Potter series allowed witch covens to be found and contacted through numerous networking websites. It became safer to identify as a witch, even though Wicca had already been recognized as a religion in the United States since 1986.
Solitary Witchcraft
Within Wicca, a form of witchcraft known as Solitary Witchcraft developed. This practice emerged for those without access to local covens or who preferred to work alone. However, it lacks the time-tested teachings passed down through generations of hereditary witches. Consequently, Solitary Witchcraft is often viewed as a novice practice with limited effectiveness. Terms like "Fluffy Bunny" illustrate the derision faced by both uncredentialed coven members and unserious solitary practitioners.
The Radical Right's Response
The rise of Wicca and witchcraft has been noted by the Radical Right as a sign of an increasingly paganized society. This growth threatens their monopoly on religion, as witchcraft has historically done. It is unsurprising that, even as the presence of self-identifying witches and various esoteric entities on social media continues to grow, many secret societies and heritage covens are quietly withdrawing from the internet. This reaction is in response to the Right's agitation against DEI/CRT, LGBTQ+ rights, feminism, and witchcraft, anticipating a resurgence of legislative and other forms of persecution.
Despite possessing the powers of magick, many practitioners prefer to avoid becoming targets. It is simply easier and safer to retreat into the shadows.
The Challenges of Modern Practice
The Double-Edged Sword of Knowledge
The practice of magick is inherently secretive, relying on hidden, discreet, and uninterrupted rituals for success. The modern proliferation of occult books and media is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it democratizes access to magickal knowledge. On the other, it provides enemies of the occult with insights into practitioners' mindsets, habits, and rituals, making identification and targeting easier.
Sorcerers can often protect themselves from enemies through wealth, power, or connections, even without their magick. Witches, however, typically rely on covens for extra protection and to enhance their magick through numbers. Solitary witches remain the most vulnerable, lacking access to the inner-circle rituals of covens and secret societies, as well as the esoteric expertise of sorcerers.
The Reality of Surveillance
Unfortunately, privacy is no longer guaranteed for anyone. Suspected witches and sorcerers are often the first to be surveilled among targeted minorities. While ICE ostensibly focuses on immigrants, the secret surveillance of witches and sorcerers has been ongoing for decades. An official round-up began during the advanced theocratic dictatorship of Donald J. Trump.
Thanks to "ex-witches" who betray their peers for favor and rewards, along with the vast quantities of publicly available resources on the occult, anyone can be identified as a practicing occultist. Ritual objects found or planted on their persons or in their homes can serve as evidence. From jewelry to candles, tattoos to stones, and even common practices like meditation and yoga have become suspect.
Practical Survival Strategies
Protecting Yourself
Whether you identify as a solitary witch, a coven witch, or a sorcerer, if you fear being targeted in a modern witch hunt, you must become practical in every aspect of your craft. Consider ridding your home of all things occult and using ordinary household objects instead. Commit your favorite spells, incantations, and rituals to memory. Hide or destroy spell books and grimoires, along with any other books related to the occult.
Adopting the techniques of natural witches, who do not rely on traditional occult tools, is essential. Transform every aspect of your magickal workings from outward, spoken rituals to internal, silent practices. Most importantly, accomplish these changes before you undergo surveillance, as all can be known to the watchers before you recognize that you are being surveilled.
Monitoring Your Privacy
It is advisable to develop the means to check your privacy status daily if you suspect you might be targeted for surveillance due to your public presence. You may already be under surveillance without realizing it, as it can be undetectable, even by advanced equipment.
When surveilled, there will be no sanctuary from the evil eye. Your surveillance may be secretly live-streamed to a worldwide audience. Any hidden spaces, doors, bookshelves, cupboards, attics, or chambers will be discovered and penetrated. Your entire home, vehicles, and places of work or worship will be covered in surveillance, as if sprinkled with evil fairy dust. For instance, a new painting may initially be free of surveillance, but shortly after purchase, it may mysteriously acquire it.
The Threat of Wicked Witches
Additionally, you may become a target for wicked witches who will have access to your live-streamed surveillance footage. They can zoom in and out on you and your surroundings, intensifying their curses far beyond the ordinary reach of magick. Your own spells can be blocked, neutralized, deflected, or reversed, leading to a multitude of afflictions and indignities.
Your loved ones, colleagues, and even pets could be affected, tormenting you into madness. Your vehicles may experience mechanical issues, and your yard and plants could wither. Your ability to work may be jeopardized by fatigue, illness, or injury, isolating you from family, friends, and coven members. The only way to survive this humiliation and harm is to continuously draw upon your internal, secret magick and fortitude, while finding ways to keep your intentions hidden from the watchers.
Sleep as much as you can; it will be your only refuge from the intense scrutiny and exhaustion of combatting the evil eye. Your magickal goal must be to protect yourself, both practically and magickally, while figuring out how to permanently break the evil eye to free yourself.
